We even managed to get some drone shots while we were at the top of the mountain and Wtalk about one of the coolest areas to fly your drone! Speaking of gear, here's what we suggest you take with you while on your hike and what gear we utilized as well. But the really nice thing about the hike, the sandstones kind of created this stair step effect all the way up the mountain, which made it pretty easy to navigate! There isn't a 'trail' so to speak of, when you are hiking up the side of the mountain, so we just created our own way up. probably more medium to hard most of the time. If you want to hike the massive Sandstones like we did and see the incredible views of the Las Vegas Strip from the top, with your GPS type in the words 'Red Spring Picnic Area', and you will be taken to a small little parking area. NOPE! Turns out, you actually have to reserve a specific time slot to drive the loop ( see below in 'Things To Know' section) & there is a fee to do so.Īfter being turned around, of course I had drank a ton of water and needed a bathroom asap, & this is how we landed on our hiking location! Oh, and the best part, it was free to park, and no reservations necessary! We were told about the Scenic Loop which is near the visitors center (a 13 mile one way scenic drive of the Mojave Desert), so we attempted to drive straight through. it just so happened that our resort, Red Rock Casino Resort and Spa ( watch or read about it), was literally 6 miles away and we had an amazing view from our room, of the canyons themselves! I can't tell you how many times we have been to Vegas and never even knew this place existed! Anyway, long story short, we decided to just drive up in the canyon area and see what there was to do up there. Watch your speed on this road, which is patrolled.On our most recent vacation, we weren't sure what to do in Vegas, but we knew we wanted to be outdoors for a good portion of it, and we didn't want to drive more than 30 minutes to find our outdoors hike. Turn left onto Moenkopi Road, which has a sign for Red Rock Canyon Campground, and drive 1.2 miles to the campground. Drive 2.2 miles, taking exit 26 to reach an intersection with Route 159 (Charleston Boulevard). Take exit 81A for Summerlin Parkway and drive 6.5 miles, using a ramp on the right to get on Clack County Route 215 South. From Las Vegas, take Interstate 15 to exit 42 and follow Route 95 west for 5 miles (heading toward Reno). To get to the campground: Red Rock Canyon Campground is located off Moenkopi Road, just south of State Route 159, 1.9 miles east of the Scenic Drive in Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Red Rock Canyon Campground from Moenkopi Road The group sites host 10 to 15 people each with spots for a dozen tents and eight vehicles. Red Rock Canyon Campground also has seven group sites that are available by reservation only for $40 per night (prices as of 2018). Bring exact change or a check for the fee envelopes. The price is cut in half for holders of America the Beautiful Senior and Access Pass Cards. Each individual site (including walk-in sites) is $15 per night and a 14-night limit in effect. All sites are first-come first served (no reservations). The campground is open from around Labor Day to Memorial Day but closes in the summer when temperatures become inhospitably hot. when using generators, radios, and music players is prohibited. When staying for multiple days and not paying upfront, fees must be paid by 11 a.m. Arrive at the campground, select a site and pay the campground fee within the first 30 minutes.
